Announcing Our First Elected Board Members

Austin Robey

Our first board elections have concluded, and we're excited to announce the results. Thank you to everyone who participated in this historic moment for Subvert.

Meet Your Elected Representatives

Hannah Lee Benson - Artist Representative (Bogotá)

Hannah is a musician, producer, and interdisciplinary artist (under the name haana lee). Beyond her artistic practice, she has worked across the music industry in radio, labels, tour management, and recently co-founded an artist-friendly sync agency and management firm called Frutful.

Freya Yamamoto - Label Representative (San Francisco)

Freya is the General Manager of legendary Alternative Tentacles Records and Creative Director for Porcelain Doll Productions, with over 15 years in the music industry helping creatives build businesses around their art. She specializes in working with indie artists, labels, and events to create vibrant communities and sustainable growth strategies.

Nick Austin - Supporter Representative (Toronto)

Nick runs Canada's first and longest-running independent music services company, Indie Pool, offering fair and transparent distribution deals for artists and labels wanting to stay autonomous. He operates without outside funding, keeping systems lean and focused on what artists actually need.

These three individuals will join our board alongside our existing 3 board representatives, bringing our board to 6 members.

Team Updates

We're also excited to share updates on our growing team:

Sean Adams (NYC) has officially joined as our full-time development lead (!) Sean has been part of Subvert since the beginning, was also a worker-member of Ampled, and is now leading our platform development efforts. We're already moving way faster now. Get ready.

We're continuing to work with Props Supply (NYC), the design team who created our brand identity, as they continue work on our platform and communications design. Props Supply partner Lucy Liu is acting as our fractional creative director.

We're also beginning to work with member Mitchell Maynard (Lisbon/ London) , who formerly led growth and community at both Depop and Feeld, bringing valuable experience in effectively scaling the reach and adoption of platforms.

You can expect a refreshed look to our communications as we begin a campaign to publicly introduce the people behind Subvert (our members) to the world.

What's Next

As we move forward with our newly elected board, we'll be working on:

  1. Developing ways for members to communicate ideas, thoughts, or concerns directly to their board representatives
  2. Transparent processes for sharing board-level decisions and meeting minutes with the community
  3. Agreeing on a fee structure/ model currently being discussed in our member forum

This is just the beginning of building truly democratic governance for our platform. And what a moment of opportunity. We have funding, we have a team in place, we have our first elected board members, and we're ready to make a collectively-owned and controlled platform a reality. Get ready for onboarding to start in several short weeks.
